Customs to get 700 additional staff for GST implementation

LABUAN, Jan 9 — The Royal Customs and Excise Department has received approval for an additional 700 staff to ensure the successful implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) scheduled on April 1, this year.

Its Director-General, Datuk Seri Khazali Ahmad said the staff comprised enforcement personnel to be assigned to all customs offices throughout the country.

“There is a need for additional staff to see our enforcement is effective and ensure the success of the GST implementation, and we have received approval for this,” he told reporters after launching the Labuan customs’ online e-Vehicle application system, here today.

He said efforts were in the pipeline to track down companies that had yet to register for GST under the GST System.

Khazali reminded business establishments with annual turnover of RM500,000 and more to register for GST despite the expiry of the deadline of December, 31, 2014.

“We are still checking to trace companies with annual turnover of RM500,000 and more which have yet to register. The deadline is a mere deadline for registration and companies can still register before its implementation in April,” he said.

He also said there was no decision over the penalty amount imposed on those failing to register after the GST implementation, which was contrary to the media reports of a RM100 per day penalty.

“We have not decided on the amount of penalty as yet to be imposed on companies failing to register for GST,” he said. — Bernama
